Justification

In the last years, the reason of economical conditions and change of market demands which are frequently changing and instead of classic fruit growing,  preferring the  application of modern fruit growing which allows to obtain much more yield and high quality products from the unit area is an urgent need for the producers of both regions.

Modern fruit growing is done in 6230 one-tenth of a hectare area in Kirklareli. 560,7 one-tenth of a hectare of it is dwarf fruit growing which is a type of modern fruit growing. On the other hand 16455 one-tenth of a hectare of 30162 one-tenth of a hectare modern fruit growing area is dwarf fruit growing in Burgas, Bulgaria.

In classic fruit growing on an average of one-tenth of a hectare 20-28 saplings can be planted but in dwarf fruit growing this amount is approximately 170-190 saplings in one-tenth of hectare. For instance in the classic apple gardens the harvest is taken nearly 1-2 tonne in one-tenth of a hectare. On the other hand by the modern system 6-8 tonne apple harvest can be taken.

In the classic apple gardens, grafted varieties can reach the economical productivity in 12-15 years, in the modern systems, the grafted varieties on the mature trees can reach the entire and economical productivity in 3-4 years. For this reason the investment costs of classic fruit growing which are made by using dwarf matures has been coming back and also the income that is obtained from the unit area is increased.

As a result of that the dwarf fruit growing which is an alternative and economic modern growing method is a kind of a production type which should necessariliy be applied in both regions.

The general target of our project; to spread modern fruit growing in both regions and to raise social standards by contributing the economical development.

Special Target is to increase the yield of unit area by teaching the techniques of modern fruit growing to the both over border producers, to encourage for production and set a platform to make the producers of both regions coordinate each other.

The relation between programme target and the project.

Our project proposal, to improve coordination of over border at the local level and supporting the economical potential increase entirely serves to its general aims.

In the context of our project which we will apply the training seminars that is the part of activity that producers of both sides and the trip organisations which will be arranged and; to set and improve the communication in the border regions. Furthermore, to built the application constructions of the over border common project between the leader and partner establishments and to increase their institutional capabilities is aimed.

Relevance of the action to the priorities of the programme

The activities which will be applied on the project and to teach the modern fruit growing techniques to the producers of both border regions and to give encourage aimed at application. The conclusion of those activities, the producers will prefer modern fruit growing therefore the yield which is obtained from the per unit area and also their income will increase so they will contribute the economical development in the region. With the trips which will be arranged in the both border regions by sharing the knowledge, Skills and experiences of the producers each other will lead the exchange in those regions.

Identification of perceived needs and constraints in the target countries

One of the most important problem of fruit growing which is done by using the classic growing methods in both regions is the rarity of yield and amount of unit area. In addition to this the gardening works such as pruning, thinning and fertilizing harder than the dwarf fruit growing and the fighting with diseases can not be effectively controlled. The cost of hiring worker and production increases. Because of that the bigness and colour of fruit and quality become very low.

As a result of that, the rate of marketing ability of fruit falls and its economical yield reduces.

The main reason of all problems is lacking of knowledge about the technique of modern fruit growing and the advantage of dwarf fruit growing.

With our project, the training seminars which we give to the 150 producers who live in both border regions. The modern fruit growing techniques will be taught and they will be encourage to prefer the modern applications by giving the modern fruit growing booklets and the trips which we will arrange to the modern fruit growing gardens.

List of target groups and estimated number of direct and indirect beneficiaries

Target Group: Nearly 1500 farmers and their families who deal with the modern fruit growing and living in the city centres of Kirklareli and Burgas and also in their villages.

Direct Beneficiaries: The estimated fruit growers of both sides who will join the activity which is prepared in the context of our project.

Indirect Beneficiaries: The producers who do the agricultural production in the both regions, the industrial factories that process the good quality productions which are produced by modern techniques and markets who sell those products and the consumers who consume those products.

Reasons for the selection of the target groups and activities

In the last years, preferring to the modern fruit growing which allows to obtain higher yield and better quality harvest from per unit area instead of classic methods is an urgent need because of the change of economical conditions and new market demands. The requests which are coming from the producers who are living in both regions and who are occupied by classic fruit growing are evaluated, considering their knowledge absences in modern agricultural techniques and dwarf fruit growing applications they are selected as target group.

Project Conclusion Meeting of Modern Fruit Growing Project which is Supported by Central Finance and Contracts Unit Within 2004 Bulgaria-Turkey Joint Small Projects Fund With the Contribution of Grant Aid of EU made by the participation of participant institution the authorities of Burgas Province Directorate of Agriculture in Alpullu/Turkey at 13.00 on 18.05.2007. The meeting results stated and specified below:

  1. GENERAL EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT: The project that is started in 01.12.2006 and ended 31.05.2007 completed with out any interruption as it indicated in the programme of application form.
  2. PROJECT RESULTS: One of the most important problems is the scarcity of yield of per unit area in classic fruit growing which is done in both regions. Nevertheless gardening works such as pruning, rarefying, fertilizing can be done harder than modern fruit growing and the control of weed, disease and insects can not efficiently be controlled. Human power and production costs are increased because of harvest and hard handling conditions. Therefore the quality and quantity of the products are become low. In this case marketable product rate goes down and the economical benefits to the producers are reduced. The main reason of all those problems is the absence of enough knowledge of producers in modern fruit growing techniques and its advantages. Within our project, the modern fruit growing techniques are taught and they promoted to do the application of new methods by the training seminar, hand booklets of modern fruit growing and the technical tour to the modern fruit growing gardens. At the end of all those activities and after the project a goal of %10 increase of modern fruit gardens is expected within 2 years. By these increases, the fruit production is thought to be increased %15 in our region in 3 years. The fact the new built up modern fruit gardens are to incline to produce fruit with all capacity in next years would rapidly improve our production value. Also the selling value of external and internal market is expected to be at the rate of %15 because of these fruits produced in the modern gardens have the desired standards in the aspect of quality and quantity.

The partners of this project are two institution; Kirklareli / Alpullu Cooperative of Sugar Beet Growers and The Chamber of Agriculture of Burgas have got an institutional structure. By the Modern Fruit Growing Project, these technical and administrative capacities will be improved by increasing and are to allow to be shared with the target group.
